Few things are more important in the marketing business than testing and tracking. Knowing what your readers, potential customers and customers are doing on your website can help make the entire difference between success and failure. You can’t always trust your intuition to guide you on how best to set up your website. As a matter of fact, you would be foolish to do so.

In the past, you had to pay huge sums of money to get the kind of software and scripts that has enabled marketing experts to do all the testing and tracking necessary to get the advantage over you when setting up their websites. But now, thanks to the folks at Google, you can have every advantage those pros have – without paying a penny.

The first tool you need is Google Analytics. This tool is completely free and lets you track the visitors that come to your page in great detail.

But knowing the tracking numbers doesn’t really tell you the whole story. Real improvements come when you are able to take action based on that tracking. When you can try out different elements on your website and test them against one another so you can keep the one that does the best. This is commonly called split testing. It once was the province only of marketing experts.

For that Google you can use Google Website Optimizer. This tool lets you compare different elements against one another so that you can constantly be improving your website.
